Epic today announced that it’s much-anticipated account merge feature for console players is finally live. If you head to this page here, you’ll get a rundown of how it works and what the special conditions are to ensure everything goes smoothly and you don’t end up getting locked out of one of your accounts. To be clear, this is only going to be useful if you have V-Bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency, or any collectibles like skins or emotes that are locked to another platform that you don’t typically play on.

Since last fall, when Sony finally relented and opened up the PlayStation platform for Fortnite gamers, players have been allowed to move their Fortnite accounts between PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. However, because Sony prevented PS4 players from logging in on Switch or Xbox if they ever authenticated their account through its PSN system, that meant there was a segment of Fortnite players who may have had some collectibles and currency stuck on the PS4 version of the game, or alternatively stuck on the Switch or Xbox portion if they happened to be primarily PS4 players.

Epic said it was working on a solution slated to come out by the end of the year, but in November, the developer ultimately delayed it until 2019 to work out some kinks. Now, it’s finally ready for prime time. The way it works is relatively simple, despite the whole situation being pretty messy. You basically log into whichever account you’d prefer to become your primary account, and then separately log into the account you’d like to be your secondary account. This works for mobile and PC logins, but chances are you were using the same account across the platforms. It’s only console players who were locked out between PS4, Xbox, and Switch.

From there, your secondary account will be linked to your primary one and disabled, meaning you won’t be able to log into it ever again. Two weeks later, though, your cosmetic items and V-Buck balance will show up in your primary account. There are some conditions, and they’re important to keep in mind:

One account must have played on Xbox One or Switch and the other on PS4 before September 28th, 2018 to be eligible.Your account must not currently be banned or disabled.In-game items and V-Bucks will be held for two weeks before they’re merged to your primary account.You’ll need access to all email addresses that are associated with accounts you wish to merge.If you have a duplicate third-party login, like Facebook, on both your primary and secondary account, the secondary login will be unlinked. You can unlink it prior to merging.Battle Royale will allow you to merge all cosmetic items. Save the World will allow you to merge llamas, defenders, heroes, schematics, survivors, XP, evolution and perk materials.Other items such as Unreal Marketplace items, Creative Islands, and Save The World account level and progress will not be merged over from your secondary account.

The pressing one here is the date requirement up top, indicating that you need to have had two of these accounts across a PS4 and an Xbox or Switch before the date Sony first announced cross-play and progression. Another really important one is that your actual in-game progress doesn’t transfer, so make sure you’re not nuking an account with a nearly completed battle pass when you could simply move your cosmetics over from another platform instead. All in all, it’s not a perfect solution, but it seems to be the best we’ve got at the moment, and it’s certainly a godsend compared to inoperable platform nightmare Fortnite players faced when the Switch version first launched last June.
